چکیده

Introduction: Northwest Africa 773 is one of the more unusual lunar meteorites found in recent years because it contains a prominent clast lithology, which appears to be an olivine-rich cumulate [1-4] and because it is a very-low-Ti (VLT) mare breccia with relatively high incompatible-trace-element concentrations and LREE/HREE enrichment [3]. A lunar origin was verified by Fagan and coworkers [2] on the basis of noble-gas contents, oxygen isotopes, and mineral compositions. Fagan et al. described two lithologies: (1) heterolithic impact breccia with a regolith component and (2) cumulus olivine gabbronorite. Here, we refer to these as the breccia (Bx) lithology and the olivinecumulate (OC) lithology. Visible/near Infrared Spectral Characterization of Brecciated Mare Basalt Flow and Surface Mare Basalt

Introduction: Lunar mare basalts are products of partial melting of the lunar interior, thus are keys to understand the chemical compositions of the source mantle. However, the iron-enrichment of the mare basalt samples returned by Apollo and Luna missions, compared to the terrestrial basalts, have led to an inference that the mare basalt hand specimen do not represent the primary magma composi...

Meteoritic Evidence for Extensive Compositional Variability on the Moon

Introduction: Crystallization of the lunar magma ocean occurred ~4.4 Ga [e.g., 1-4] and produced three principal magma source regions [5-6]. These sources are characterized chemically by low titanium (Ti), high Ti, and high potassium, rare earth element, and phosphorous (KREEP) abundances. The KREEP component was produced after nearly complete solidification of the magma ocean and is highly enr...

Mafic Granulitic Impactite Northwest Africa 3163: a Unique Meteorite from the Deep Lunar Crust

Petrology and Mineral Compositions: The fresh, pale gray interior of this specimen has multiple shock fractures (with very minor calcite coatings) and some thin glass veinlets (Figure 2). This rock is a poikiloblastic recrystallized breccia, with larger grains of plagioclase (~70%) enclosing much smaller grains (less than 100 microns across) of pyroxene (~20%), olivine (~10%) and accessory Ti-c...

Elephant Moraine 87521 : two pyroxenes , two chromites , and two ilmenites , but only one fractionation series

Introduction: Elephant Moraine (EET) 87521 is a polymict mare basalt breccia containing very-low-titanium (VLT) basalt components and rarer KREEP components. [1] showed that within pyroxene from VLT lithic clasts of EET87521, there were two distinct trends in a plot of Ti/(Ti+Cr) versus Fe/(Fe+Mg) (Figure 1). They suggested that the two fractionation trends (A and B) were the result of differen...

Trace element evolution during crystallisation and remelting of the lunar magma ocean

Newly determined ilmenite-melt and orthopyroxene-melt partition coefficients are used to construct quantitative forward models of the evolution of high field strength element (HFSE, Zr, Nb, Hf, Ta, Th, U) and rare earth element (REE: Nd, Sm, Lu) concentrations during crystallisation and subsequent remelting of the Lunar Magma Ocean (LMO). Crystallisation models suggest that the initial LMO must...
